Spaghetti Squash Ideas: Say Goodbye to a Carb Overload!

If there’s one thing I have a guilty pleasure for, it’s got to be pasta! I love the noodles and sauce just slurping down my throat and making me feel so filled. Have a piece of garlic bread on the side and that’s a whole meal right there! But the problem is that it’s too filling and a calorie-dense meal, that I end up filling up my tummy AND my waistline. So I decided that enough was enough, I needed to lose the pounds and find alternatives to my favorite dish. And that’s when I found out about spaghetti squash! This delicious vegetable can be used as an alternative to noodles as well, having a similar texture with even better (and healthier!) flavor. If you want to try this wonder vegetable as well, then read on as I show you my two favorite spaghetti squash ideas!

Two Best Spaghetti Squash Ideas You Need to Try

Craving for spaghetti or pasta but still losing weight or can’t have too many carbs? Here are two of my favorite spaghetti squash ideas that are so simple to do:

Spaghetti Squash with Marinara

This is the most simple and go-to recipe I use because it just uses four ingredients! It’s quick to make and satisfies my craving for spaghetti with deliciously sweet and sour marinara sauce.

  • Two whole spaghetti squashes
  • Quarter cup of extra-virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • Four cups of prepared (or jarred) marinara sauce

Steps to Follow:

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Line an oven tray with aluminum foil
  2. Split the squashes in half, removing the seeds. Season the squash with the oil, salt, and pepper. With the flesh side down, let it bake for about 30 to 40 minutes or until the squash is fully cooked. Remove it from the oven and let it cool until you can hold it.
  3. While letting it cool, cook the marinara sauce in a saute pan. Allow it to simmer or add ingredients you’d like (such as minced garlic or more seasonings!).
  4. Scrape the squash using a fork. Once you have scraped everything, toss it into the marinara sauce and mix them together. Serve and enjoy!

Tip: I love pairing this with garlic bread. After all, I cut the calories, so I can have a piece of delicious bread to wipe the sauce with!

Pesto Spaghetti Squash

This is another favorite of mine because I love the nutty flavor and the fact that it’s healthy because of the olive oil and nuts!spaghetti squash ideas

  • Quarter cup of raw cashew nuts
  • Quarter cup of roasted pine nuts
  • Two tablespoons of nutritional yeast
  • A pinch of sea salt
  • Two cups of packed fresh basil
  • Three cloves of minced garlic
  • Three tablespoons of sundried tomatoes, chopped
  • Quarter cup of extra virgin olive oil

Steps to Follow:

  1. Follow the instructions for preparing the spaghetti squash like how I mentioned above.
  2. To prepare the pesto sauce, add the cashews, pine nuts, yeast, and the sea salt in a food processor and let it pulse until it’s fine.
  3. Add the basil, garlic, tomatoes, and the oil, pureeing it all together until it becomes a fine paste. You can add more oil or hot water if needed in order to make it less thick. Taste it and adjust it if needed, adding more seasonings or liquid.
  4. Once you have the spaghetti squash cooked, scrape it off the flesh with a fork. Put it in a big bowl or individual plates, then adding in the pesto sauce. Serve and enjoy!

Tip: What I love to do before serving is to add more toppings, like parmesan cheese or red chili flakes to give it more flavor. You can also top it off with roasted pine nuts.

In Conclusion

When it comes to losing or maintaining weight, you’ll need to make sure that you start thinking about both health and calories. While pasta seems so enticing to eat, it can also rack up on the calories. So instead of going for a huge plate of spaghetti, go for healthier and delicious alternatives that taste almost the same, like spaghetti squash! With a ton of health benefits and fewer calories, you can have a huge amount of spaghetti without worrying about the calorie overload.

I hope that this article on my two favorite spaghetti squash ideas helped you find new inspiration to cut the calories and have you find love in vegetables! So what are you waiting for? If you’ve got a craving for spaghetti, then try these two recipes next time.
